Ora Dee Virginia Stackhouse, 89, Lagro, IN died at 1:15 p.m. Wednesday, May 27, 2009 in her residence. She was born November 29, 1919 in Grassy, AL to Sterling & Georgia E. (Wilcoxson) Scott. She attended school in Greenhill, AL and was a Rosie the Riveter at General Motors in Detroit, MI during WWII. She worked at Kroger Egg Exchange, Wabash, IN for 30 years retiring in 1981. In June 1949 she married Horace R. Pickens. He died February 14, 1960. On November 30, 1964 she married Ernest N. Stackhouse. He died in April 2005. She attended Wabash Freewill Baptist Church at Erie Street, Wabash, IN. She is survived by one son, Dale Pickens, Lagro, IN; and two sisters, Shirley Pounders, St. Joseph, MI and Dorothy Duncan, Red Bay, AL. Seven brothers and one sister are deceased. Franklin Colburn, 80, North Manchester, IN died at 7:00 a.m. Monday, May 18, 2009 at his residence. He was born on June 8, 1928 in Hamilton, AL to Floyd & Nola (James) Colburn. On August 1, 1952 he married Martha Mullinix. She survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Mark (Nancy) Leiter, Bullhead City, AZ and Mrs. Alan (Diana) Macnak, Warsaw, IN and four grandchildren. Seven brothers and three sisters are deceased. He was a serviceman for Public Service Indiana for 36 years, retiring in 1985. Frank served in the US Air-Force from 1946-1949, was a life member and past commander of American Legion Post # 286. She was born in Kosciusko County, IN on October 29, 1918 to Floyd & Marie (Fox) Newcomer. On June 2, 1934 she married Earl E. Tridle. He died November 12, 1986. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Phil (Earlene) Joseph, Toledo, Ohio and Alice Tridle, Bowling Green, KY. One grandhcild and three great-grandchildren. One Brother, Hubert R. (Alice) Newcomer and two sisters, Vivian Miller and Mrs. Eugene (JoAnne) Valentine, all survive at North Manchester. A brother, Ronald Newcomer and two sisters, Louise Goehler and Carolyn Noland are deceased. Jeanette was a homemaker and former member of the Eel River Community Church of the Brethren. He was born November 13, 1917 in Baltimore, Maryland to David M. & Ruth Wiedemeyer (Nichols) Cordray. He graduated from Oberlin (Ohio) College in 1940 with a BS degree. He married Hazel (Roberts) Earl on December 12, 1954 in Baltimore, MD. She died in December 2004. He was retired owner of Cordray Landscape Co., Baltimore, MD. He and his wife lived in Phoenix, MD until 2002. In 2002 they moved to the Brethren Home in New Oxford, PA. David moved to Timbercrest Senior Living Community, North Manchester, IN, in 2005. He was a member of Liberty Mills Church of the Brethren, Liberty Mills, IN and Mount Moriah Lodge F & AM in Towson, MD. Cleon D. Overmyer, 85, North Manchester, IN and formerly of Laketon, IN died at 2:35 p.m. Thursday, April 30, 2009 in Peabody Healthcare Center. He was born June 7, 1923 to William McKinley & Grace (Johnson) Overmyer in Leiters Ford, IN. He graduated from Laketon High School in 1941, where he was senior class president and played on the basketball team. He was a US Coast Guard veteran serving during World War II. He attended the Akron United Methodist Church, Akron, IN. For many years he was a youth baseball coach in the North Manchester and Laketon area. He was a livestock farmer and co-owner with his father of the Laketon Elevator, Laketon, IN. Later he worked for United Telephone Co., Warsaw, IN. On June 1, 1944 he married Iris Virginia Blackwell. She died September 9, 1994. He is survived by two sons, Michael (Peggy) Overmyer, Warsaw, IN and Mitchell (Kendall) Overmyer, Fort Wayne, IN; one daughter, Mona (Mrs. Richard) Shepherd, Laketon, IN and five grandchildren. Chester had been a supervisor at the former Bryan Manufacturing in North Manchester and retired from Kinder Manufacturing at Warsaw in 1992. Surviving are one son, Chet Allen Jr., Fort Wayne, IN; two daughters, Mrs. Lynn (Dianna) Parker, Silver Lake, IN and Mrs. Phil (Debbie) Zile, North Manchester. Twenty-two grandchildren and forty-two great-grandchildren. One sister, Mrs. Canton (Ella Ree) Moore, Claypool, IN. One daughter, Patricia Parker died February 18, 1998. He was born in Willard, Ohio on November 7, 1937 to Williard & Stella (Lynch) Sharpless. On August 1, 1958 he married Joyce Coppler. She survives. He was a US Navy veteran and a Presbyterian minister for 27 years. He graduated from Fostoria (Ohio) High School. He began studies at Gordon College in Boston, MA and finished his BA degree at Cedarville Collge, Cedarville, OH. He received his Masters Degree from Wheaton College, Wheaton, IL in 1968 and his Doctorate Degree from Trinity Seminary, Chicago, IL in 1987. He was a Credit Manager for Our Sunday Visitor, Huntington, IN retiring in 2000. On September 18, 1960 he married Sandra K. Maloy. She died February 22, 2007. DR. A. BLAIR HELMAN, 88, NORTH MANCHESTER, IN
Dr. A. Blair Helman, 88, North Manchester, IN died Sunday, March 22, 2009 in Timbercrest Healthcare Center. He was born on Christmas Day in Windber, PA to Henry & Luie (Pritt) Helman in 1920. On June 22, 1947 he married Patricia Kennedy. She preceded him in death October 28, 2005. He graduated from Windber High School. Following high school he worked as a coal miner for the White-Berwin mines for three years to help support his family before he was able to attend college. He then enrolled in Bethany Bible Training School in Chicago, IL and went on to complete his college degree at McPherson College, where he was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. His Masters and Doctoral studies were conducted at the University of Kansas. He was pastor of three Church of the Brethren congregations in Kansas during those years in Newton, Ottawa, and Wichita. In 1956 he was named President of Manchester College at age 35. During his 30-year tenure, he started the Brethren Colleges Abroad Program, put emphasis on the International Peace Program, and was instrumental in adding sixteen buildings to the campus. He traveled to over 30 countries due to his passion for international study. He received five honorary doctorate degrees from Indiana University, Manchester College, Bridgewater College, McPherson College, and Juniata College. Among the many honors he received were, Indiana Academy in 1987- limited to 100 living members, Sagamore of the Wabash- the highest award the Governor of Indiana can bestow, Paul Harris Fellow by Rotary International Foundation, Award for dedication to Indiana Higher Education. Some of Dr. Helman's offices and board appointments include, Commission on Arms Control Education from the United Nations, Board of Directors for the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities; President for the Indiana Conference of Higher Education; Chairman and Interim President of the Council of Protestant Colleges and Universities; President of the Associated Colleges of Indiana and the President's Advisory Committee for the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA); policy board for the Department of Higher Education, National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA; and moderator of the Church of the Brethren- highest elective office in the denomination. After retirement the Helman's lived in Fort Wayne, IN where Dr. Helman was a member of the Fort Wayne Downtown Rotary Club and the Quest Club. He was a member of Manchester Church of the Brethren. In his personal life his greatest joy was seen in his relationships with family and friends, especially his grandchildren. He is survived by two daughters, Bunny Hill (Patrick), Wichita, KS and Patty Magaro (Raymond), Columbus, IN. Grandchildren; Hamilton, Harrison and Katie Hill; Matthew and Marshall Magaro. RONALD L. FRUITT, 72, WEST LAFAYETTE, IN
Ronald L. Fruitt, 72, of West Lafayette, IN died March 18, 2009 in Kosciusko County, IN. He was born on February 25, 1937 at Wabash County, Indiana to Floyd H. & Josephine M. (Shipley) Fruitt. On June 14, 1959 he married Phyllis Ross. She survives. He graduated from Sidney High School in 1954, Purdue University in 1959 and received his Masters degree from Purdue in 1965. Ron started his career at Purdue University in 1962 having positions that ranged from Hall Manager to eventually Vice President of Housing and Food Services. Under his responsibilities at Purdue were the Purdue Student Union, Elliott Hall of Music, and the Black Cultural Center. He retired in 1996 with the honorary title of Vice President Emeritus. He served as a special assistant to the director of the Purdue Alumni Association for 5 years after his retirement. Ron dedicated his life to help others and always found time to help those in need. He was a member of Lynn Treece Boys Club, board of directors of Home Hospital, chairman of Tippecanoe County United Way, and board of directors president of Westminster Village. He was former chairman of the Tippecanoe County Republican Party, former member of the Tippecanoe County Council and a member of Ag Extension of Tippecanoe County. While at Purdue he was involved in Sir Sire of the Purdue Glee Club, advisor to The Rheamer Club, and awarded Old Masters Honorary from the university. He was an avid supporter of all Purdue athletics being heavily involved with the John Purdue Club, Downtown Grid Iron Club, and Fast Breakers. Ron and Phyllis only missed four home football games since 1962. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, West Lafayette. Surviving are three sons; Mark Fruitt, David Fruitt, Steven (Debbie) Fruitt, all of West Lafayette, IN. One daughter, Nancy (Dave) Halsema, Springboro, OH. EGON W. BORGMANN, 72, NORTH MANCHESTER, IN
Egon W. Borgmann, 72, North Manchester, IN died at 6:00 a.m. Friday, March 13, 2009 in his residence. Over the last year he had overcome a series of obstacles in his recovery from injuries sustained in an auto accident in March 2008, and had successfully reclaimed his life and place in the community. He was born March 16, 1936 in Stettin, Germany, resettling with his family in Uelzen, Germany, in 1945 as a war refugee. He came to the United State as an exchange student in 1953 where he stayed with the family of Carl and Doreen Myers in Roaring Spring, PA. There he met his future wife, Sandra Over. After returning to Germany and serving an apprenticeship in Import/Export, he immigrated to the United States. He married Sandra on June 25, 1960. He subsequently graduated from Temple University and received an M.B.A. from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. He worked for the Dupont Company in Wilmington, Delaware before committing his energies to starting his own buisness in international marketing and teaching in the business program at Ursinus College. Most recently he worked as the Finance Director at the Red Cross of the Delmarva Peninsula. After retirement, he moved with his wife Sandra to North Manchester, IN where he was an active member of the Manchester Church of the Brethren. He was the beloved and courageous father of three children and grandfather of seven grandchildren. He enjoyed soccer, canoeing, hiking, reading, and taking on new challenges. He was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Sandra Borgmann, she died March 3, 2008, and his parents, Margarete and Walter Borgmann. He is survived by his children, Karin (John) Borgmann-Winter of Conshohocken, PA, R. Kurt (Loyce) Borgmann of North Manchester, IN, Kevin (Haise) Borgmann of Washington, DC, sister, Inge Whelpdale of Dalington, England and seven grandchildren. Dr. Paul A. Eiler, 78, North Manchester, IN died at 6:14 p.m. Sunday, January 18, 2009 in Lutheran Hospital, Ft. Wayne. He was born January 8, 1931 in Nampa, ID to Austin & Edna (Betts) Eiler. On August 30, 1953 he married Alma Morningstar. She survives. Also surviving are a son, Gary (Randa) Eiler, West Lafayette, IN; two daughters, Beth (Scott) Bolman, Lincolnshire, IL and Karen (Mike Sturgeon) Eiler, North Manchester, IN. A sister, Anne McKellip, Nampa, ID. Eight grandchildren. One brother and one siter are deceased. Dr. Eiler graduated from Nampa (ID) High School in 1949, Manchester College with a BA in 1953, and the University of Michigan Medical School in 1960. He did his intern training at McLaren Hospital, Flint, MI. He was co-founder of Manchester Clinic with the late Dr. Lloyd Smith, where he practiced medicine for the next 36 years. He was on the staff of Wabash County Hospital, a member of Indiana Medical Association and Wabash County Medical Society. He served on the 5 County Mental Health Board. A member of First Brethren Church, he sang with the choir and served as Sunday School teacher and Deacon. He enjoyed photography and had a love of animals and nature. Ralph P. Chapman, 87, North Manchester, IN died at 6:35 p.m. Friday, January 16, 2009 in Peabody Healthcare Center. He was born September 27, 1921 at Bonaqua, TN to Russell & Clara (Pluimer) Chapman. On July 11, 1942 he married Betty Barr. She died October 25, 2008. Surviving are a son, Bruce Chapman (and companion Phillip Addario) Westport, Connecticut and a daughter, Mrs. Bill (Susan) Greer, North Manchester, IN. Two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Two brothers and one sister are deceased. He was a self-employed farmer for many years. He was employed with Bourbon Creamery for six years and the Laketon Creamery for fourteen years until it's closing. Later he worked for Endicott Church Furniture Co., Warsaw, IN retiring in 1984. Ralph served with the U.S. Army from 1942-1945 and was a Tech Sergeant in Patton's 3rd Army, 80th Division. He received two Purple Hearts for injury in service, one with Oak Leaf Cluster. He also received the EAME Theater Ribbon with three Bronze Stars. He was a life member of the American Legion Post # 402, Laketon, IN , a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Disabled American Veterans. Ruby Catharine Moore, 98, North Manchester, IN and formerly of Warsaw, IN died at 1:07 a.m. January 1, 2009 in Peabody Healthcare Center. She was born at LaPlace, Illinois on April 15, 1910 to Frank & Dollie (Bahney) Wolfe. On May 3, 1941 she married Wesley Moore. He died February 15, 2006. Surviving are two sons, Stanley (Dee) Moore, North Manchester, IN and Duane (Diane) Moore, Muncie, IN. Five grandchildren, Liza Moore, East Lansing, MI; Jacob Moore (fiance' Alyssa Anglin), Loveland, CO; Eric Moore (fiance' Emily Buckwalter), Tempe, AZ ; Ryan Moore and Lori Moore, Tucson, AZ. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Emerson Wolfe and Russell Wolfe. She grew up living at times in Florida, North Manchester and Goshen,IN where she graduated from Goshen High School in 1928. She graduated from the International Business College in Fort Wayne and attended Manchester College for her teaching certificate. She was an elementary school teacher at Laketon, IN during the 1930's. Ruby and her husband lived in Michigan for a number of years where she was a foster parent, 4-H leader, a member of the Women's Christian Temperance Union and actively involved with the Methodist Church and the Church of the Brethren. In 1960 she moved with her family to the Warsaw area where she and her husband owned and operated Moore's Pizza until retirement in 1975. After moving to Warsaw she was a member of the North Winona Church of the Brethren and involved with the local Farm Bureau chapter. Her greatest loves were her faith, her family, her pets, and the world of nature. She was an accomplished piano player and especially enjoyed playing and singing church hymns. Her cooking was legendary along with her gardening, caring for her fruit trees, and canning the produce she grew. She was an avid bird watcher and observer of wild flowers. She graduated in May 1937 from Manchester College majoring in English, Business English and Library Science. In the summer of 1938 she received teaching licenses for Ohio and Indiana. She was a librarian and taught English at Elmhurst High School,Fort Wayne from August 1938 - December 1939. After marriage she was a homemaker and bookkeeper for Hoover Farms. On December 24, 1939 she married H. Robert Hoover. He died February 9, 2006. Surviving are two sons, Steve (Elit) Hoover, Roanoke, IN and John (Karin) Hoover, Knoxville, TN. A daughter, Mary Ann (Gary) Frey, North Manchester, IN. Nine grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. William A. "Bill" Smiley, 64, Silver Lake, IN died Tuesday, December 2, 2008 at 6:05 p.m. in his residence. He was born June 4, 1944 in Warsaw, IN to Bert & Georgia (Warren) Smiley Jr. He graduated from Atwood High School in 1962 and was a US Army veteran. Bill retired in 1999 from R.R. Donnelley & Sons, Warsaw, IN after 36 years of service. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was a member of the John C. Peterson American Legion Post #0049 in Warsaw, IN. On August 19, 1967 he married Juanita "Tina" Royce. She survives. Also surviving are one son, Shawn (Heidi) Smiley, Fort Wayne, IN; one daughter, Kristina M. Smiley, North Manchester, IN; five grandchildren, Cristofer Smiley, North Manchester, IN; Brittany Smiley, North Manchester, IN; Derek Smiley, Fort Wayne, IN; Dustin Smiley, Fort Wayne, IN and Treyvin Moss, Fort Wayne, IN. Lacy E. Carpenter, 86, formerly of Roann, IN died at 6:15 a.m. Friday, November 28, 2008 in Rolling Meadows Healthcare, LaFontaine, IN. He was born in Ashland, KY on February 8, 1922 to Henry & Lola (Salyers) Carpenter. On October 18, 1944 he married Helen I. Clemons. She died September 5, 2002. Surviving are a daughter, Vickie Carpenter, Yelm, WA. Two sisters, Madge Buckley, Carleton, MI and Mable Fry, Frankfort, IN. Also surviving are three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, one brother and three sisters. Lacy was a retired supervisor from General Tire in Wabash, IN. He was a WW II US Army veteran serving from 1942-1946 and attended Laketon Wesleyan Church. GRAVESIDE SERVICES WILL BE HELD AT 11:00 A.M. Hershel W. Butcher, 70, North Manchester, IN died at 2:31 p.m. Thursday, November 27, 2008 in Wabash County Hospital. He was born September 2, 1938. On September 8, 2006 he married Janice (Marshall) Brainard. She survives. Also surviving are a step-son, Bill (Tammie) McNeeley, North Manchester and a step-daughter, Debbie Poole, North Manchester. One sister, Sarah Armstrong, Pekin, IL. Six step grandchildren. One brother is deceased. Bill was a retired chemical engineer for Central Soya at Ft. Wayne, IN. After retirement he was a consulting chemical engineer for Spallinger Millwright at Lima, Ohio. He attended Warsaw Community Church, Warsaw, IN. Michael R. "Butch" England, 47, North Manchester, IN died at 7:30 p.m. Friday in rural North Manchester. He was born April 12, 1961 in Wabash, Indiana to Lloyd & Myrtle (Rowe) England. They survive at North Manchester. Also surviving are two daughters, Kim England, Laketon, IN and April England, Huntington, IN. One brother, Rick "Chip" England, North Manchester, IN, a sister Kim (Rick) Robison, North Manchester, IN. He was a truck driver for Pierceton Trucking since May of 2008. Prior to that he was a driver for Cripe Transport for 6 years and had worked at Invensys Controls for 23 years. He enjoyed riding his Harley-Davidson, fishing, hunting and spending time with family.
