Galen E. Knecht, 81, North Manchester, IN died at 1:16 a.m. Saturday, May 10, 2008 in Lutheran Hospital, Ft. Wayne, IN. He was born in Chester Township, Wabash County, Indiana on May 6, 1927 to Howard A. & Lulu (Sell) Knecht. On September 17, 1949, he married Lois C. Crist. She survives. Galen was a retired farmer and member of the 1945 graduating class of Chester High School, where he played on the basketball team. Addie A. Graybill, 89, North Manchester, IN died April 9, 2008 in Parkview Huntington Hospital, Huntington, IN. She was born July 4, 1918 in Montgomery Co., OH to Alvie A. & Ida May (Rapp) Huffman. On September 14, 1936 she married R. Kenneth Graybill Sr. He survives. At age 17, Addie was baptized into Christ, living her life as a service to Him, our Savior. She served her Master well as a member of the Old German Baptist Brethren. Anyone who knew Mother's heart knew beyond a doubt that her home was not on this earth. Addie was a homemaker, Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Aunt and friend. She possessed a quick wit and a marvelous sense of humor that served her well throughout all her life. She has been a pleasure to care for in these last failing years. Not one to complain, Addie will be remembered for her pleasant ways and impishness she never lost even to the end. She enjoyed reading, sewing and was an excellent cook and pie baker. Said one of the children, "We were poor in worldly goods, but we ate like kings and queens." Mother always loved flowers; yellow roses being one of her favorite. Timbercrest Senior Living Center was Addie's last gracious home on earth where she will be sadly missed by the staff who loved and cared for her. In addition to her husband, she is survived by three sons, Kenny Graybill Jr., Liberty Mills, IN, Riley Graybill, Eustis, FL and Everett Graybill, Osteen, FL; four daughters, Mrs. Harold (Kay) Eller, North Manchester, IN, Eileen Cook, Eldorado, OH, Mrs. Herb (Beth) Anderson, North Manchester, IN and Mrs. Rick (Cheri) Vanvassaleur, Mishawaka, IN; thirty three grandchildren, seventy great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren. Leslie "Kelly" Edward McKinley, 77, North Manchester, IN and formerly of Portland, IN died March 27, 2008 in Indiana University Hospital, Indianapolis, IN. He was born September 22, 1930 in Union City, OH to Leslie & Geraldine (Bennett) Erwin. On August 12, 1950 he married Beverly June Keister. She died November 13, 1992. He graduated from East Side High School, Union City, OH in 1948. He served in the US Navy 1947-1952 and worked at Ohio Valley Gas, Portland, IN for 12 years, 1951-1963 and then at CTS, Berne, IN for 30 years, 1963 until he retired in 1993. He was a former volunteer firefighter for the Portland Fire Dept. 1958-1978, a member of Portland Moose Lodge, North Manchester American Legion and a former member of the Elks Lodge of Portland,IN. In his retirement, he spent many hours fishing and telling fish stories with his friends at the lake cottage and dedicated his life to his grandchildren, whom he adored. He died August 16, 1986. She was a member of the Laketon American Legion Auxiliary. She was a member of the former Faith United Methodist Church at Silver Lake and active in the women's organization. In later years she was a member of the Packerton United Methodist Church. Sandra O. Borgmann, 69, North Manchester, IN died at 9:06 p.m. Monday, March 3, 2008 in an automobile accident in Huntington County, IN. She was born July 30, 1938 in Roaring Spring, PA and was a graduate of Roaring Spring High School. She completed her undergraduate degree at Juniata College in 1960 and married her husband, Egon Borgmann, on June 25 of that same year. She also completed post-graduate course work in Elementary Education at Temple University. She was an elementary school teacher in the Upper Darby (PA) School District and later committed her energies to raising her three children. Active in the church her entire life, she was at various times a member of the Roaring Spring First Church of the Brethren, Trinity Presbyterian Church and the Wilmington Church of the Brethren in Wilmington, DE, and after moving to North Manchester, IN, the Manchester Church of the Brethren. She was the beloved "Grammy" of seven grandchildren and enjoyed attending and supporting her grandchildren's sports and school activities, gardening, cross-stitching, and baking pies and prolific numbers of Christmas cookies to share with her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert S. and Mildred H. (Hoover) Over. ALAN THORNE HOWENSTINE, 84, NORTH MANCHESTER, IN
Alan Thorne Howenstine, 84, Timbercrest Senior Living Community, North Manchester, IN, died February 27, 2008 at 10:55 a.m. at the Wabash Community Hospital, Wabash, IN.He was born to Paul and Lucile Howenstine, January 27, 1924 in Huntington, IN. After high school, he attended Manchester College where he was an outstanding basketball athlete ranking 2nd in the state for scoring his freshman year. He also earned Second Team All-Conference honors. He also was named to the College All-Star Team selected by sportswriters throughout Indiana. In his sophomore year he was ranked third in the state for scoring. He also earned First Team All-Conference honors. His career at Manchester College was cut short by his enlistment in the army in March 1943. While in the army he was awarded the Purple Heart after being wounded in the Battle of the Bulge. He also was awarded the Bronze Star for valor in action. After returning from WWII, he began farming in Huntington County, later returning to college for a degree in Elementary Education. Other colleges attended were the University of Mississippi and Ball State University. His teaching career began at Miami, Indiana, where he taught and then was principal. He was teacher and principal at Chester Elementary School, North Manchester, IN 1958-1963. He was principal at Nelson School, Morton Grove, IL, where the school library was named in his honor. He next became Superintendent of Schools in Union, IL and completed his career in Michigan City, IN where he was a teacher and Assistant Superintendent of Schools. He was named to the Sports Hall of Fame, Otho Winger Society, Alumni Service Award, all of Manchester College. He had also been a member of the Lion’s Club, Kiwanis Club, Phi Delta Kappa and several educational groups. Along with his wife, Melba, he is survived by a daughter, Gene Alayne Gard, a son, Kenton Alan Howentine (Janet), and one son, Kevin Kyle Howenstine, deceased. Also, surviving are three grandchildren, Skyler Epperson, Rachel Howenstine, and Carly Howenstine, as well as three great-grandchildren. A sister, Doris Hess survives; a brother, Douglas, is deceased. Private graveside services will be held for the immediate family with a memorial service at a later date. Colleen V. Scheetz, 90, formerly of rural Roann, IN died at 3:10 a.m. Monday, February 25, 2008 in Rusk County Memorial Hospital, Ladysmith, WI. She was born May 1, 1917 in North Manchester, IN to Galen & Pauline (Weber) Cook. During her early years she was raised by her grandparents, George & Wilma Weber, in North Manchester, IN while her mother attended Purdue University. She graduated from Central High School, North Manchester, IN and Purdue University with a Master's in Home Economics Education. After college, she taught school in Laketon, IN, and at St. Bonifice School , Lafayette, IN and occasional classes at Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN. While traveling back and forth to campus from her grandparents home, she fell in love with 'the man in the rear view mirror' her bus driver, Ernest Scheetz. They were married April 28, 1944. He died June 19, 1995. Her married life (51 years) was spent in West Lafayette raising her children, teaching, being active in church functions and being "on call" for the neighborhood children. In later years, Colleen & Ernie, returned to the family farm outside Roann, IN. There they spent time with friends, were active in church activities and continued to be strong parents. After Ernie's death, Colleen moved to Wisconsin, and eventually spent her last 10 years with her other family at Queen of Angels in Radisson, WI. She was their "grandma", peaceful and loved. She will be missed by her son, Jeffrey and his partner, Lana Crafton, of Naples, FL and daughter, Doraleen Scheetz-Hollar and the late Patrick Hollar of Mankato, MN. Her grandchildren, Mackenzie Scheetz, Warsaw, IN, Collee (Hollar) Kolbinger and Oscar Kolbinger of Mankato, MN and Zachary Scheetz and fiancee Maurin Utz of Whidbey, WA. She operated Dot's Corner in Urbana for many years and later did home-style catering for weddings and parties. Harold J. Michael, 89, Mason Healthcare Center, Warsaw, IN and formerly of Sidney, IN , died at 4:40 p.m. Wednesday, February 20, 2008 in Kosciusko Community Hospital, Warsaw. He was born November 3, 1918 in Jackson Township, Kosciusko County, IN to Roy F. & Clara M. (Metzger) Michael. On November 15, 1940 he married Pansy D. Plant. She died May 13, 2002. Harold was a retired farmer and a member of the American Legion Post #253, North Webster, IN. He served with the US Navy in WWII. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. William (Kathy) Greider, Cromwell, IN and Mrs. Rick (Betsy) Zellers, Silver Lake, IN and one sister, Marceline Russell, Pierceton, IN and three grandchildren and three great grandchildren. One son, David Michael, died in 2003. Two brothers, Delbert Michael and Donald Michael, and three sisters, Mildred McKee and two infant sisters, Opal & Marjorie Michael, are deceased. Charles F. Renschler, 92, North Manchester, IN died at 11:50 a.m. Saturday, February 9, 2008 in Peabody Healthcare Center. He was born September 14, 1915 in Madison, IN to Charles & Nell (Kelly) Renschler. He graduated from Indiana University with a bachelors degree in business/chemistry. He was purchasing agent for Seagram's Distillery in Louisville, KY for 35 years. On January 30, 1943 he married Mary Alice Gehring. She died in 1995. On May 3, 1997 he married Jean (Loucks) Grubb. She survives. Also surviving are a son, William C. "Bill" Renschler, Cincinnati, OH; two daughters, Linda Renschler, Lawrenceburg, KY and Mrs. David (Jane) Richards, Vicksburg, MS. One step son, James Grubb, Salem, OR and two step daughters, Mrs. Ryan (Sally) Williams, Charlotte, NC and Mrs. Gary (Marsha) Groninger, Olathe, KS. Four grandchildren also survive. Charles was a navigator and 2nd lieutenant in the Army-Air Force from 1942-1945 and a member of Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Louisville, KY. Mary Smith Yeatter, 92, North Manchester, IN died at 11:37 p.m. Wednesday, January 16, 2008 in Timbercrest Healthcare Center, North Manchester. She was born May 31, 1915 in Mifflin County, PA to Charles M. & Ella (Auker) Smith. On June 10, 1939 she married David B. Yeatter. He died March 24, 1984. She earned her BS degree from Manchester College in 1960 and her Masters from Ball State University. Mary was a member of Manchester Church of the Brethren, North Manchester, IN. She was active in Girl Scouts and Church of the Brethren summer camp programs at Camp Mack. She was a member of the College Women's Club. She taught fifth grade in Manchester Community Schools for 17 years retiring in 1977. After leaving the classroom and after becoming widowed, she continued to help others by supporting them through the loss of spouses. Both in her classroom and her life, she will be remembered for her keen sense of humor and her love for words. She was an avid reader and enjoyed playing bridge. She is survived by four daughters, Ann Y. Hammer, Perth, Australia; Susan Y. Brown, Columbia, MD; Jane A. Yeatter, Harrisburg, PA; Nancy (Randy) Sare, Roann, IN; Five grandchildren, Elizabeth (John) Clements, Australia; Katherine (Andrew) Millar, Australia; Natasha (Amy Worman) Sare, Ft. Wayne, IN; Jonathan (Sacha Gaerte) Sare, Roann, IN; Claire Brown, Columbia, MD; Six great grandchildren, Nathaniel Worman, Drake Sare, Amy Millar, Alex Millar, Harriet Millar and Genevieve Jane Clements.
